Patient-operated Handheld Capnograph
A Pulmonary Disease Monitoring Device
Patent Name:
Effort-Independent, Portable, User-Operated Capnograph Devices and Related Methods
Inventor(s):
Julius Goepp, M.D.
This capnograph improves early detection of pulmonary problems by allowing patients to monitor co2 levels at home.
Summary: This technology is a cost-effective device used to establish baseline lung function and provide rapid and effective evaluation of changes in lung function. The waveform-based analysis provides a methodology for evaluation of pulmonary function and can alert the user when airways become increasingly constricted. It is especially useful for elderly and young patients because it does not rely on peak flow measurements.

Application(s): This device is intended for patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other lung conditions. It is intended to inform patients and their caregivers of early changes in the pattern of release of carbon dioxide into exhaled air in order to take appropriate remedial action (e.g. administer medications, visit physician, or go to the emergency room).
This technology provides:
- an easy method for children, adults, and the elderly to compare changes in exhaled carbon dioxide patterns with previously stored "normals".
- Informs patient with specific instructions of appropriate remedial action through programmed voice commands.
- Can be connected to the computer in order to send data to the physician, or be downloaded on-site in the case of an emergency.
Advantages/Benefits:
- Cost-Effective
- Establishes Baseline Measurement
- Provides Continuous Monitoring
- Evaluates Pulmonary Capacity
- Early Detection of Potential Problems
